Book auction to begin Saturday WHITTIER – Bidding on rare and collectable books opens Saturday for the Friends of the Library’s monthly auction. You can post a bid on any of this month’s selections at the display case in the front area of the Whittier Public Library, 7344 S. Washington Ave. Bidding will close at noon on June 24. This month’s titles include “Byrd’s Great Adventure,” “London Overlooked,” “The Root of Life” and “That’s My Story.” Most of the books are ranked in fair to excellent condition and all are listed as collectible. Auction proceeds are used to purchase library materials and equipment for activities such as special children’s programs and after-school activities. For more information, call (562) 464-3452. Photo contest seeks applicants LA MIRADA – Entries are still being accepted for the city’s spring 2006 photo contest, which is open to professionals and amateurs alike. All photographs must be taken within La Mirada. All entries are subject to being printed in city publications. Contestants must complete an entry form and waiver, available at city facilities or online at www.cityoflamirada.org. Up to three photos can be submitted in the following categories: people, public places and nature. Photos will be accepted in black-and-white or color. They should be no smaller than 4 inches by 6 inches and no larger than 8 inches by 10 inches. Prizes include theater tickets, restaurant gift certificates and items donated by local businesses. The council members unanimously approved the raise Tuesday.
