Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said he wants a pause

first_imgTuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said he wants a pause on rental housing proposals for the next 100 days. The move comes as a response to several larger complexes with more than 200 beds going up on vacant land following the April 27, 2011, tornado, mainly in areas near the University of Alabama campus. But the city can’t deny future rezoning based on “having too many apartments,” Maddox said.Instead, Maddox said he’s following the suggestion of District 4 City Councilman Matt Calderone, who suggested for a pause on the large developments catered toward college students.“In the last few months, we’ve seen nearly 2,000 proposed beds either coming forward to the planning department or on its way,” Maddox said. “The city’s infrastructure, especially in our central city, cannot handle that type of impact.”If the proposal is adopted, it will be effective beginning Jan. 30.last_img read more
