NewsWritten by Ankita Dwivedi Johri | Published: November 1 2015 4:36 am Banwari Bagadia with his pigeons Almost every household in this community of blacksmiths keeps these birds as pets (Express photo by Praveen Khanna) Top News On October 19 Munna Sheelam Khetu and Sona went missing That night two mobile phones and Rs 5000 were also stolen from the tent of Banwari Bagadia a 70-year-old blacksmith in Devipura village of Haryana’s Sonipat district but it was the missing pigeons that enraged him the most Pigeons There are hundreds of them in the most impoverished part of Devipura where the Bagadias who mostly work as blacksmiths live People here say the community has had the ivory coloured hazel-eyed pigeons as pets for decades “It has always been this way” says Banwari “My children and grandchildren all grew up with pigeons They all have their favourites and each one has a name” he says Given the camaraderie it was no surprise that when four of his pigeons went missing Banwari and members of his community raised an alarm The case of the missing pigeons turned ugly when Govinda Mor a 14-year-old whom Banwari accused of the theft was called in by the police for questioning and his body was found in Devipura the following day The death which came days after two Dalit children were charred to death in Faridabad district of Haryana led to a huge outcry but almost everyone in this Dalit village says this was no caste conflict — it was just about the pigeons Govinda’s mother Sanjita doesn’t believe her son could have stolen — or killed himself (Express photo by Praveen Khanna) Muddy pathways open drains and a chaotic line-up of tents — blue-black tarpaulin sheets balanced on broken tree branches — make up the Bagadia neighbourhood in Devipura The Dhanuks and the other Dalit communities stay in similar pockets close by But if there is one thing that sets the blacksmiths apart from the other communities in the village it’s their passion for pigeons The Bagadias say they don’t eat their pigeons or sell them for money — the birds are just pets Scores of pigeons trot around in the yard near the Bagadias’ tents while some are kept in wooden cages “The birds in cages are new and tend to fly away Once they get used to us we will let them out too We recognise each one of them” says Naresh Bagadia Banwari’s 25-year-old son That night Banwari says he got to know that Govinda and 17-year-old Sumit both from the Dhanuk community in the village were responsible for the theft “After stealing my pigeons the rascals sold it to a boy from Bichpari (a neighbouring village) The pigeons belonged to my grandson Saman” says Banwari who is now angrily discussing the theft with a few members of his community over cups of tea Hearing his name being mentioned four-year-old Saman makes his way through the group and declares “Woh mera kabootar tha (those were my pigeons)” “The next day I found the boy from Bichpari playing with the pigeons and he told me Govinda and Sumit had sold him the pigeons for Rs 300” says Banwari Didn’t he file a police complaint “What will the police do Thefts in our village have increased drastically and now each one of us is taking turns to keep guard at night” he says As the Bagadias make plans to guard their pigeons in another part of Devipura a kilometre away a mother grieves for her son Sanjita 36 found Govinda’s battered body on the morning of October 22 in an abandoned house next to her shanty three days after he was accused of stealing the pigeons House No 6 in Devipura village where Govinda’s body was found hardly resembles a crime scene Two circles marked with chalk are the only signs of an investigation A group of middle-aged men huddled together on a rickety cot discusses Govinda’s death Sanjita sits on the floor weeping under her veil as the men chart out a strategy for “insaaf (justice)” She has been called to the “meeting” for “inputs” but is allowed to offer little The house belongs to Govinda’s uncle and has been vacant for years since the family was arrested over a theft charge Since Sanjita’s husband Ram Pal who worked as a daily wage labourer died in 2004 she and her three children had been living in a shanty right behind the house Back in her hut after a little prodding from one of the relatives Sanjita speaks “I went to that house at 6 am to start the water pump The door was locked from outside and when I opened it I saw my son’s body on the floor” According to Govinda’s post-mortem report he hanged himself to death but the family is not convinced They claim he died in police custody “There was no rope in the room” she says She doesn’t believe her son could have stolen — or killed himself “He was so young He spent his days watching cartoons” she says In a corner of her tent is a 14-inch black-and-white television that’s covered in dust Her relatives say Govinda didn’t go to school and ran errands for grocery shop owners in the neighbourhood for which he was paid a small sum “He never negotiated with the shopkeepers Even after a long day’s work he would sometimes only get Rs 20” says his aunt Nirmala Mor A few houses away is Sumit’s The 17-year-old says that on October 19 after helping a tea shop owner Govinda and he went out for a stroll near the Gohana railway station and stayed there until 10 pm It was then says Sumit that the two friends hatched the plot of stealing the pigeons and money from the Bagadias “I only wanted to steal the cash and phones Govinda pushed for the pigeons I told him that would make matters worse” says Sumit who has never gone to school and now spends his days “taking care of my little sister” As word spread of the theft Govinda’s elder brother Gautam 16 says he took Govinda to the City Gohana Police Station to “clear his name” Gautam also asked Sumit’s mother Rani to bring her son along Banwari came too At the police station Rani says she settled the matter by giving Rs 2500 to Banwari Gautam alleges that ASIs Ashok and Subhash asked him for a bribe of Rs 5000 “I somehow borrowed the money and handed it to them They then asked for another Rs 5000 but I couldn’t arrange that” says Gautam who like his brother has never gone to school Gautam says he left Govinda at the police station that night The next morning they found his body But Sumit’s mother Rani who works at an oil mill corroborates the police version: that she saw Govinda leave the police station on the pretext of drinking water Both the policemen were suspended after the case came to light The Haryana government which came in for a lot of flak for the death of the 14-year-old also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for Govinda’s family The family says they are yet to get any money In the days since Govinda’s death political workers have been queuing up outside Sanjita’s home assuring “justice” to the grieving family and blaming the Khattar government for the “inefficient probe” On this Tuesday morning too there are at least eight workers from the Congress and INLD who have arrived in Devipura As they discuss the case Satpal an INLD worker plays a video on his phone of Govinda’s body lying on the floor of the abandoned house “How can this be suicide See both his legs are broken” he tells a group of people who have crowded around to watch the video Back in the Bagadia neighbourhood members are relieved that no one suspects them of murder “They stole our pigeons we got some money and now we are trying to move on with our children and our pigeons” says Naresh For all the latest India News download Indian
