companionship are strong enough glues to keep a marriage intact staying together 24/7 is a different ball game altogether (Source: Thinkstock Images) Top News Marriage is one of the most delicate partnerships in life While we feel that love sex and companionship are strong enough glues to keep a marriage intact staying together 24/7 is a different ball game altogether On top of it when some couples decide to work together their partnership enters into yet another crucial phase The couples are not just partners in personal life but professional as well And while some cynics shake their head at the whole prospect of spending more than necessary time with their spouses there are others who swear by the pros of such an enterprise Share This Article Related Article Take the case of Raghav and Tanya When Raghav was faced with redundancy the couple decided to take the money and start their own catering service “We took a chance and sat down to work on the details We knew there would be chances of over-lapping blame game and even hurt egos so we ensured that we clearly chalk out what departments each would take care of Raghav was good with dealing with people at ground level so he took on the job of hiring cooks maids and even the finances Since I was in marketing line I took on the job of getting orders and soon we were making good money with no impact on our relationship” says Tanya The trouble arises when regular interaction the stress of work intertwined closely with the responsibilities of personal lives starts taking its toll on their intimate lives “There have been times when we have major disagreements regarding how the work should be done And the problem is we can’t leave the work and the professional pressures in the office We carry that baggage into our bedroom and that has really taken us to the brink of calling it quits – both professionally and personally” says Raghav Experts say that the best partnerships happen when the couples recognise and capitalise on each other’s strengths And once the roles have been decided they should stick to their briefs and not encroach upon the other territory “Our initial fights were because we would continue offering our two-penny bits without being asked and it led to resentment in both of us But one day we decided that we needed to stop that and stop duplicating our efforts wasting our energy and taking the other to be an amateur” says Tanya Counsellors say that the best and the only way couples can work together professionally is by trusting the other’s capabilities and keeping the communication lines open for all disagreements “It took us a lot of time and effort but we learnt to make the distinction that we were arguing and disagreeing for the good of company and not to show that the other is not capable” said Raghav Experts also suggest that it is imperative for working couples to keep their “work time and “couple time” separate They say that work partners must make sure that they also talk about things other than work meet people other than just clients and have pleasure trips as well besides business trips What’s interesting is that sometimes such close emotional bonding that emerges as a result of the couples facing the challenges of joint work lives makes their married life much stronger and richer For all the latest Lifestyle News download Indian Express Ramachandran Mokeri’s resistance to oppression has translated into theatre He directed and acted in Naikali (Dog’s Opera) to mark the death anniversary of Safdar Hashmi by political goons in Delhi translated the play Che Guevara from Italian into Malayalam and penned a performance text Fragmentos based on Brecht: A Third World Beggar’s Opera among others He was the first person from a backward caste to join as permanent faculty at the School of Drama Calicut University where his acting classes were held outdoors in local colonies At the International Theatre Festival of Kerala (ITFoK) held in Thrissur till February 28 Mokeri acted out the terror and shock he experienced on hearing of the suicide of Dalit student Rohith Vemula at the University of Hyderabad Over phone from Thrissur the Kerala-based performer who is known as Dogtor Mockery spoke about the play Untouchable I Am: I Am Rohith Vemula Excerpts from the interview: What was the genesis of your performance piece I was shocked by the suicide It shocked the youth of the country The consciousness of a new India is emerging out of the Dalit fire Rohith Vemula was passionate He said ‘I always wanted to be a writer A writer of science like Carl Sagan’ Dalit lives matter and it has become a dominant part of new politics aesthetics and re-reading of history As an actor it has activated my body soul flesh blood and sweat The play emerged from a natural urge You have used social media predominantly Facebook for this performance I used the social network to have a discussion on Rohith Vemula I tried to connect with other actors of Kerala and outside asking them to join me with their own performance modules on Rohith Vemula I believe that actors should come out of the shackles of the director Around 26 actors responded most of them activists engaging in political plays What is the nature of your own performance I draw a cart which is traditionally used to transport vegetables in which an actor playing a dead body is wrapped in a mat I become a man in front and with the help of a mask a woman at the back We sing songs from the history of Dalit struggles performing fragments from Rohith Vemula’s poems as well as enacting a montage of Dalits being slaughtered through history There is no linearity and the subjects jump from one distance and time to another Finally I carry the corpse in my arms and take it to the audience The performance ends with me lying down and the actor playing the dead body utter syllables and words such as ‘Jai’ and ‘Bhim’ The performance includes local and indigenous performers How deeply does the situation of Dalits in Kerala influence your theatre There is a very long and wretched history of Dalits in Kerala the adivasis The adivasi life is vanishing every day from the state of Kerala They used to live in the high ranges and valleys and deforestation and intruders have deprived them of everything Everyday we hear of the adivasi women being molested I did a research with the Centre for Development Studies in Trivandrum on the topic “The Alienation of Culture Performance and development of the Adivasi-Kurumbas of Attapady” You too belong to a backward community As a young boy I experienced discrimination If I went to the next house which belonged to an upper caste Hindu I had to wash the cup in which I drank tea and the place where it was kept had to be sprinkled with water That left a deep impression on me especially since the upper caste boy was my classmate and we went to school together How did you enter theatre My father was a farmer and in my boyhood I would accompany the people who stayed up the whole night in the cucumber and pumpkin fields so that foxes did not get at the crop Vellari natakam or the cucumber plays were performed in which all of us participated After the play we would have payasam Small boys were taken as characters Much later when I was in high school I was a part of a play by a William Morrison of the British Council who would perform William Shakespeare’s plays with children I was selected as Hamlet We were taken to London where we performed at six-seven places That was my exposure to theatre being staged in Sydney at present The vast expanse of Kamathipura Asia’s largest and oldest red light area recedes into the distance Ahead lies Jatinga a village that locals refer to as the “valley of death for birds” Purva gives five young girls — all runaways — a ticket to ride this train The route will pass through the tribal belt and the Red Corridor but the protagonists also make internal journeys into the unknown Purva scripts their life-changing trip She is a director and musician famous for plays in which music is the hero but Jatinga was commissioned by Australian theatre company bAKEHOUSE and opened at Kings Cross Theatre a few days ago It stars Faezeh Jalali and Sapna Bhavnani among others and will be performed at NCPA’s Centrestage festival in November Excerpts from an interview with Purva: How did the collaboration take place Artistic director of bAKEHOUSE Suzanne Millar has been coming to India and she has a lot of interest in languages and cultures In 2014 she visited Kamathipura with an NGO The brief she gave me piqued my curiosity She said the text should have in the beginning middle or end girls preparing for a journey and wanting to understand how to pack This could be metaphorical or literal She also mentioned Maya Angelou’s Caged Bird Songs I had a few images to work with — girls birds freedom and a journey The other thing she wanted was that the play be lyrical What happened next While I was thinking about the story I found myself on a flight with a magazine that had a piece on Jatinga in Assam which is a tourist destination because birds go there to commit suicide An alternative explanation is that the cross winds fog and other factors confuse the young birds into crashing to death From such morbid truth emerges an entire business model I knew then that the train was headed to Jatinga Whether it reaches there is something else Who are some of the protagonists The five girls are borrowed from three of my favourite Hindi poems by Katyayni Vinod Kumar Shukla and Naresh Saxena (her father) Three of the girls are from tribal regions one of them is from a small town and there is a hockey player also from a small town They meet an independent-minded woman on the train and we see what she does to them and what they do to one another There is also a 500-year-old woman a parrot in a cage and a tourist guide who represents business The play is a little surreal in which birds become girls and girls become birds Suzanne is a movement-based director who does not know Hindi the language she wanted for the play How does Kamathipura feature in the storyline Kamathipura is in the sub-consciousness or the background The play is not based in Kamathipura It is a place where trade pivots on imbalances perversion and things not
