How Liverpool’s starting XI could look next season
11 11 11 Attacking midfield: Roberto Firmino – After a slow start to life at Liverpool, the Brazil star is gradually making a name for himself at Anfield and Klopp will be keen on helping the ex-Hoffenheim star reach his potential too. 11 Centre back: Joel Matip – The Schalke defender will join the Reds on a free transfer in the summer and should improve the team with his pace and ball-playing tendencies. He could prove a vital asset if he hits the ground running at Anfield. Goalkeeper: Marc-Andre ter Stegen – Click the right arrow above to see how Liverpool’s starting XI could look next season based on current rumours… – With Simon Mignolets form continuing to fluctuate, almost on a minute-by-minute basis, its likely the Belgian will either be ditched or benched next season, despite his new five-year deal. With Germany producing plenty of good goalkeepers, Klopp will have a decent idea about who to sign as his replacement and there are rumours surrounding Barcelona back up Ter Stegen. 11 Centre midfield: Granit Xhaka – The Swiss star has admitted on several occasions moving to the Premier League would see him fulfil a childhood dream, and Klopp could help do that if he decides to splash the cash on him in the summer. The Borussia Moenchengladbach star is valued highly and could cost up to £38m, mind you. His temperament may also be a worry in English football. 11 Right back: Nathaniel Clyne – The England full-back has been solid if unspectacular in his debut season at Liverpool. The changing of managers hasnt disrupted him too much and he could well develop further with a pre-season under Klopp. 11 Centre midfield: Emre Can – The German international has been a real star for the Reds since joining in 2014 and should continue at Anfield under the stewardship of his compatriot. Right wing: Karim Bellarabi – Hes not quite hit the heights of last season but the German star is still a menace on the wing and could be a target for Klopp, who has openly admitted his squad lacks wingers. Reportedly rated at £15m, the Berlin-born star would need to score more than the two Bundesliga goals hes got this season and weigh in with more than his current tally of three assists. 11 Left wing: Philippe Coutinho – Unless a huge offer is made for his services, the Brazilian is another man who is almost certain to stay with Liverpool for the time being. His creativity means hes a vital component for the Reds and with improved firepower around him he could provide even more goals for the club next season. 11 11 11 Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester City in the League Cup leaves them on the verge of missing out on European football next season. The Reds are currently battling it out for a Europa League spot with several other teams, while they could qualify for the Champions League should they win the aforementioned competition, in which they are still competing. And Jurgen Klopp is currently preparing his transfer options for the summer as he looks to transform the Anfield side into top four challengers once again. If the German gaffer can inspire his side to qualify for Europe he should, with his reputation, have the pick of players to choose from, but it could get tricky if they don’t make it into a continental competition.Rumours are already making the newspapers about which stars could join Klopp’s Merseyside revolution as he looks to overhaul his squad. So, based on current speculation, what could Liverpool’s starting XI look like next season? Click the right arrow above to see… Centre back: Martin Skrtel – Injury has disrupted the Slovakians season, with a torn hamstring keeping him out for two months but Jurgen Klopp will probably want to keep the experience centre-back to help new boy Joel Matip through his first season on Anfield. Left back: Jon Flanagan – With captain Jordan Henderson advising the board to hand the full-back, 23, a new long-term deal and Klopp insisting the player is in his thinking, its likely the popular star will remain at Anfield. If foreign signings land at Liverpool it will be important to retain a local feel through someone like Flanagan. Forward: Mario Gotze – Its ambitious but its not out of the question. The World Cup winning forward hasnt had it all his own way since leaving Borussia Dortmund for Bayern Munich and could eventually be reunited with ex-boss Klopp. Its believed the German boss will have plenty of money to spend in the summer so there is a good chance they could afford the £37m fee, but it would be another matter tempting him to a team who may not be in the Champions League.
